Christmas Countdown 2026: How Many Days Until Christmas?

Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday, 25 December. From 20 October 2026 that is 66 days away, or 9 weeks and 3 days, and the live counter below shows the exact time left right now, wherever you are. Because Christmas lands on a Friday this year, many people get a full three-day weekend and a Thursday Christmas Eve to wrap things up.

This page does more than tick down. You can type in any date to see the days, sleeps, weeks and weekdays left until Christmas, check a table that never goes out of date, see the key dates from Thanksgiving to Boxing Day, find out when Christmas starts in your time zone, and follow a week-by-week planning countdown.

Quick answers: sleeps, weeks and weekends

  • Sleeps until Christmas: the same as the number of days left. If you go to bed tonight and wake up on Christmas morning, each night counts as one sleep. From 20 October that is 66 sleeps.
  • Weeks until Christmas: divide the days by 7. From 20 October it is 9 weeks and 3 days.
  • Weekends left: from 20 October there are 9 full weekends before Christmas Day, and Christmas Day itself is a Friday. Our weekends in a year guide explains how weekends are counted.
  • Working days left: the weekdays column in the table above. Remove any public holidays or leave days that apply to you.

A Friday Christmas also means Christmas Eve is a Thursday, so last-minute shopping, travel and family dinners get squeezed into a shorter window. If you run a business or a family calendar, the busiest travel days are likely to be Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 December.

When does Christmas start in your time zone?

Christmas does not arrive everywhere at once. The first places to reach 25 December are in the Pacific, and the last are in Hawaii and the western Pacific islands. The table converts midnight at the start of 25 December in each place into London time (GMT).

That means Christmas Day lasts more than a day around the globe, since it is already underway in Kiritimati for 14 hours before London sees it, and it is still underway in Honolulu 10 hours after London has finished it. It is a handy fact if you are calling family overseas.

Buying gifts early or waiting for the sales?

Buy early

  • More stock, sizes and colours to choose from
  • Less shipping risk and no last-minute postage fees
  • Time to return or swap a wrong gift
  • Spreads the cost over several months

Wait for the sales

  • Discounts are often deepest around Black Friday and Cyber Monday
  • Prices can drop, so early buyers may pay more
  • Risk of missing sold-out popular items
  • Easy to overspend in a single sale weekend
