What is a Swiss Watch?
A Swiss Watch is just as it sounds – a watch that has been made in Switzerland. However, these watches aren’t as simple as just that. In order to be considered Swiss Made, they must follow a strict set of guidelines and regulations. But with today’s current regulations and standards, Swiss-made doesn’t mean the watch was entirely made in Switzerland. Rather, it means that the watch meets extremely high standards of quality and follows the Swiss trademark law.
Current Regulations for Swiss Watches
There are stringent regulations that must be met to constitute your watch as a “Swiss Watch”. Previously there were three conditions that had to be met in order to officially call a watch Swiss Made. These conditions were that the movement of the watch had to be Swiss, the movement was encased in Switzerland, and the watch’s final inspection was conducted by the manufacturer in Switzerland.
However, as of 2017 there have been new regulations put in place that must be met to constitute a watch as Swiss Made. Today these new regulations are as follows:
The technical design of the watch as well as it’s movements must be created in Switzerland.
At least 60% of the entire watch’s production costs must be earned in Switzerland.
At least 60% of the manufacture of the movement must be completed in Switzerland, and at least 50% of the movement’s components must be manufactured in Switzerland.
Further enhancements are still being considered as well to strengthen the Swiss brand.
