macOS Monterey: Everything You Must Know

Last year, macOS received a significant overhaul with macOS Big Sur. Thanks to Big Sur, the Mac experience came closer to iOS more than ever. However, that doesn’t mean Apple is complacent and not thinking of any further improvements. At the company’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference in June 2021, Apple unveiled the next big update – macOS Monterey or macOS 12.

Currently, the OS is in its sixth beta phase and is expected to be released in the fall. While macOS 12 is a smaller update compared to Big Sur, there are a few notable features that’ll boost your Mac experience.

Before taking full advantage of the Monterey macOS update, acquaint yourself with its best new features.

Universal Control

The addition of Universal Control is one of the most significant updates to macOS 12. Universal Control allows users to use their mouse and keyboard to control other iPads and Mac computers. All you need to do is place your iPad or other Mac near your computer, slide the mouse toward the other device, and it will pop up on your device. Even your keyboard will be supported, and you can easily drag and drop files and documents across the two devices.

Universal Control is not available in the public beta. So, it is surmised Apple might push the feature to iOS 15.1 or 15.2.

Live text and Visual Look Up

MI or machine learning on your Mac can recognize text in a picture. You can cut and paste the text from the images, select a phone number in a picture to place a call or click on an address to open Maps. Similarly, Macs will be capable of recognizing art, landmarks, breeds of dogs and more. All you need to do is flick on Visual Look Up to see information relating to the picture.

Safari redesign

Safari is all set to get a major overhaul for macOS 12. Initially, the new Safari featured a design that combined the URL bar and the tab bar. It looked streamlined but made it difficult for users to use Safari. Later, Apple made changes to the design and made that combined tab bar an option. So, customers are no longer forced to use it.

Focus

Similar to other Apple devices, Mac is getting Focus. Essentially, Focus allows users to set profiles for their notifications according to what they’re doing. So, you can create a Work Profile that only allows work messages and emails. Or, you can set a Driving focus that strictly lets through calls and not messages. Then, if someone sends you a text message, they’ll be notified that you’ve silenced your notifications.

Messages – Shared with You feature

There’s a brand new Shared with You feature for the Messages application. The feature takes the content you have received and puts it in the relevant application. So, suppose someone has shared an Apple Music sing, the song will be automatically listed in the For You section of Apple Music. Similarly, if someone shares a website link, it’ll show up in Safari’s Shared with You section on the start page.

The Shared with You feature applies to content that includes Apple News, Safari, Photos, the Apple TV app and Apple Podcasts. All of the Shared with You sections have quick links to Messages to respond to the sender. In the Messages app, you can even pin your favorite content to view later.

Along with the Shared with You feature, the Messages app has undergone some minor design changes. For example, if you send multiple images in a row to someone, they’ll appear as an image stack or little image collage that you can quickly flip through.

Shortcuts

The Shortcuts application was first introduced on the iPad and iPhone. Finally, Mac is getting the application. The app will allow Mac users to create Mac-specific Shortcuts. The Shortcuts can be run from the Spotlight, menu bar, Dock, or using Siri. Furthermore, Shortcuts created on macOS can be used on your iPhone and vice versa.

Mail privacy protection

Apple is making an honest effort to offer enhanced protection to its users from email tracking. With the macOS 12 update, Mac users can expect Mail Privacy Protection that guarantees to hide the users’ IP addresses so that senders cannot track online activity or determine your location. The feature even blocks tracking pixels.

AirPlay

macOS 12 is giving a major update to AirPlay, which will allow users to utilize Mac as a display. You can easily beam content from your iPad, iPhone and another Mac with AirPlay. If you have an iMac, you can even use it as a screen for your laptop. The feature works with a USB-C cable or wirelessly.
