You came home one evening and you’re very tired and when you’re about to sleep you realized you can’t sleep at all. Or maybe you were studying for a big test and just when you lay down on your bed to get a much-needed rest then you realized you can’t sleep a wink. Most likely you are suffering from insomnia and it is frustrating.
What is insomnia?
Insomnia is a sleep disorder wherein a person is having a hard time going to sleep or staying asleep depending upon the severity of the problem. It affects mostly adults but young people as young as 11- or 12-years old experience this as well. This body condition is not normal and could cause major problems such as:
- Lack of concentration or focus at work or in school
- Vehicular accidents especially when the person concerned is driving
- Chronic tiredness
- Temperamental and high strung
- Rapid heartbeat in severe cases
What are the causes of insomnia?
Studies show that there are many reasons why people have this condition.
We are surrounded by stress- noise, pollution, traffic, deadlines, financial issues, personal and family issues, work, school, friends, pandemics and so many factors.
Our manner of living most of the time affects us physically and psychologically. Smartphones and other gadgets play a great role in the changes in our lifestyle.
- Some people develop hobbies such as watching program series that they sometimes lost track of time.

Coffee drinkers are guilty of this though some tea like green tea also has caffeine it only consists of 8 mg. compared to 40 mg in black coffee. Dark-colored soft drinks as well contain caffeine.
Caffeine is a stimulant therefore it boosts energy that’s you feel awake and perky when you drink coffee. Moreover, one of the effects of caffeine is it delays the timing of the body clock and reduces our total sleep time which is needed by our body.
Remedy for insomnia
There are some practical remedies for insomnia that you can try.
- Be active during the day. If you’re working remotely, you can clean the house during the daytime or do any household chores.
- Exercise. Study shows that exercise can help the person suffering from insomnia in aligning their internal body clock.
- Avoid caffeine. This is difficult because coffee has been part of our lives and culture. Some people go back to drinking coffee a month or two later after they were asked to stop.
- Keep away from eating too much in the evening to avoid getting heartburn.
- Follow a sleep pattern and make sure you sleep eight (8) hours a day.
- Avoid short naps especially in the afternoon.
- Try acupuncture
- Drink Chamomile
Sleep deprivation often leads us to more complicated health problems. Though it cannot be avoided sometimes it is best to avoid things that trigger insomnia.
