Costs of materials for CNC milling
CNC machines can work with a wide range of materials. They all have different prices, of course. If you want to spend as little money as possible on this method, you should choose the least expensive material. But this material still needs to have the right properties to meet the needs of your design. In other words, you should choose the cheapest material that still helps you make the product you want.
There are many ways to make a three-dimensional project these days. There’s no question that you can use a 3D printing service for this. On the other hand, you might choose to do something else. This is shown by CNC machining, which is a type of subtractive manufacturing. This means that it will cut off parts of a solid block, which is often called a blank or a workpiece. This block is made of some kind of material, and it will be cut down with the help of several tools. You don’t want to spend too much on CNC prototyping if you’re going to use it. If you use a 3-axis CNC mill to make a part that needs two or more machine setups, you will have to do more work by hand. This is because the workpiece needs to be turned by hand after the features on one side have been machined. Costs will go up because there will be more work that needs to be done by hand. But you can also use a CNC machine with more than one axis. This will unfortunately raise the cost of machining by about 60 to 100%. Costs can be kept to a minimum by making pieces that a 3-axis CNC mill can make in just one setup.
Getting more or more
By cutting down on the time it takes to do the work, costs will also go down. This can be done by adding a fillet to the inside and outside vertical edges that is as big as possible. So, the machine can use a bigger tool to remove more material with each cut, and the speed can also be higher. If you need an inside edge that is 90 degrees, you can’t make the radius smaller. In this situation, an undercut is better. You will still save money this way.
Reduce the number of ways the machine can be set up
A 3-axis CNC mill needs to be set up at least twice to make the part above. The workpiece is turned by hand after the features on one side have been machined. This will cost more because it needs to be done by hand. You can also use CNC machines with more than one axis. This does, however, raise the cost of machining by about 60% to 100%.
To minimize cost:
Make parts that can be cut on a 3-axis CNC mill with just one or two setups.
